God: Namer Of Names
First, a poem I wrote called hymn to Kali: The Maya.
-
Everything we see is an illusion that decays
Without the darkness man would go blind in the sun
The infinite chaos is my womb…the great nameless sea. Baptized after a great cataclysm as something called sea, in actual fact having no name. In the beginning nothing had a name.
The churning of evil, the black milk falling off my tongue.
As the first flame dawns God fights to erupt from my womb.
Every life a drop in the ocean. The fabric of reality pulsates. The unstoppable flux of fire and stream. Look deep into my eyes to see the sound of eternity.
When I talk to the sea of milk it tells me that we will all live forever. It tells me that we were all born for insanity.
- what does this poem mean exactly? The maya is a concept of hindu and buddhist theology, a word with many meanings. How could so many people be the same person? How could someone we used to know suddenly disapppear, or cease to exist? Are these things illusions suggesting the nature of a higher reality? Maya is the name of the Buddha’s mother, who died giving birth to him. When he was born many illusions were put into place to protect the divine mystery of his birth. If you remember the story of the Bible, when Jesus was born the king of Jerusalem wanted to hunt him down and kill him when he was still an infant. God is a threat to the balance of power in the world; kings feel threatened, especially the jewish king, since the concept of the messiah (the saviour) in Jewish religion is that God himself will descend to rule over the whole world. Since evil exists as a check to the forces of good it will try to prevent God’s rising, often when he is still an infant. The Buddha ‘s mother created alot of illusions that only her son could pierce through in order to protect the nature of his identity. Even if God were among us today he wouldn’t want us to know. Why? Because he needs his privacy to challenge the forces no human could possibly overcome. Onto the meaning of the poem.
First line: Everything we see.. : Everything around us contains a reality that is hidden to us, only accessible to the intellect of those who have been enlightened. Once we pierce through the veil of human reality hiding what is divine behind it, our former reality starts to crumble, it starts to decay. We become hungry for divine knowledge, divine wisdom.
Second line: Without the darkness.. : When the universe was not yet created everything existed in a state of pitch black darkness. The goddess Kali was created from this darkness and the universe and the gods came from her womb. Without darkness exisiting today we would not remember the oldest state of the universe. We would become weary of seeing too much sun. Infants miss the safety of the womb, in a way they want to return. When you sleep at night without any dreams it recreates what your mind was experiencing inside the womb. We were all in a womb once. God was in the womb of his mother, thus He will never abolish night.
Third line: The infinite chaos is my womb: The greek philosophers theorized that everything was formed by two forces coming together: Chaos (or strife) and love. God was his mother’s child of love. He only exists for love and because of love. Together the gods put order to the chaos in the process of creation. Just imagine more than trillions of things flying around forming into stars and planets. After they are formed what they lacked was a name. What is a name? A name gives rise to an association of ideas whenever we hear or see it. These ideas come together with the image of the object that was named in order to form memories of things. Without names we would not be able to have concepts or memories. Where did all these names come from, where did language come from? They all came from the highest intellect: God.
The fourth line: The churning of evil: The God of time, Vishnu once judged a competition between angels and demons to see who deserved to drink the elixer of immortality. As they churn the great sea which is the womb of Mother Kali with a world - pillar to obtain the essence of immortality first they saw a liquid which represented the evil of the universe. This was very early on in the history of the cosmos, before humans were created. The gods need to defeat evil in order to find a way to live forever.
The fifth line: As the first flame dawns: Now as the driving forces of love and chaos, good and evil are put into place what else is there to do? Well, the universe is still dark. Now God is ready to be born from his mother’s womb as a manifestation of pure light, the sun of the universe. The gods prepare the way for the ultimate and most divine: The God of light, our creator.
The sixth line: Every life a drop in the ocean: Eternity is a period of time that cannot be comprehended by human intellect. Your lifespan of more than a hundred years is less than a single drop of water inside an infinite ocean. Man is created to populate the universe. Fire and water come together and all the elements resound as the formation of the universe is almost complete. In the bible, Adam, the first man was also created before the 7 days of the creation were over. But what is one day in the context of the days of creation? It could have stretched over several milleniums. Inside the eyes of God is the sound of eternity, or “Ohm”. “Ohm” is the divine word that hindus and buddhists chant meaning that everything in the universe is one.
The seventh line: When I talk to the sea of milk: When churning the great sea of Kali’s belly, a sea of not water but milk, Laskhmi, the divine bride of Vishnu emerged. As she was born as the other half of his soul, Vishnu and Laskhmi remain each other’s only possible companion throughout all lifetimes and all possible timelines. Even when they are reborn they cannot be seperated for long and always find a way to each other. As the two deities marry, communal love is born and the formation of the universe is complete.
It tells me that we were all born for insanity: All gods exist outside the realm of human science and logic. To be able to take in and comprehend what they are doing you must adopt a different or higher type or logic. The logic of a god. The logic of insanity. That’s what I hope you came to understand while reading and dissecting this poem.
